New Experiences

Jerry started taking classes at the community college in the first week of February. Our schedule was a bit grueling with school Monday through Thursday, SCI-FIT in Pleasanton Friday and wheelchair soccer on Saturdays, not to mention homework.  The drive to school is about 45 minutes, too far to drop Jerry and come back home so I am taking classes at the same time as Jer.  I'm loving it, I have a golf and a fitness class, it's a great break for me.  The first hurdle to overcome was how Jerry was to manage homework assignments, the first homework assignment was a bit overwhelming. We purchased software that allows Jerry to do calculus using his voice activation software, it's been challenging for him but he's figuring it out. Jerry really enjoyed his history class and liked the teacher very much. In the 4th week Jerry had an issue with the teacher and dropped the class.  I encouraged him to stick with it, not let the teacher get the best of him however he felt he could not work with a teacher that was so unreasonable.  Jerry has special accommodations for test taking, he takes tests at disabled student services where a scribe will write his answers. He showed up for class on Monday and found that there was to be a test however he didn't have the chance to set up the time with a scribe because he was unaware of the test. Jerry asked if he could set it up for the next day and the teacher would not allow it. The teacher explained the test date was in the syllabic (handed out the first day of school), he told Jerry he would have to take a zero and be more prepared for next time.  The bottom line is Jerry is just trying to figure out how to be a student as a quad, he took classes he thought would be easy, he didn't need them.  The purpose is to work out the kinks and figure out how to manage. As a mom I was ready to march in and have a little chat with that teacher however Jerry would not allow it, Jerry did make a complaint in disabled student services.

Jerry is playing wheel chair soccer (power soccer) on Sundays and enjoying it very much. He plays on a co-ed team with others with different disabilities, some have MS, MD and spinal cord injured.  Jerry's wheelchair is not good for the sport it's far to slow so in the beginning it was very frustrating for him.  The coach has a few extra chairs that people have handed down and offered one to Jer.  It took about 3 weeks to modify the chair to fit Jerry's needs, this weekend he was able to control his new chair with almost no issues. The team had a tournament in Santa Barbara last weekend so Dennis and Jerry made the long haul.  This was the first time since Jerry's accident that he has traveled in a vehicle for more than 2 hours as well as a first for staying in a hotel. Jerry fared well on the drive and slept fine without the alternating pressure mattress.  This was a good trial for travel, our next trip will be a little more challenging as we'll be flying to Atlanta GA in July.

Here's a little taste of power soccer:

God Bless!

Katie

I am so impressed! Soccer! School!
Will pray your plane ride and longer trip goes smoothly for you!

About that history teacher thing - IMO Stubborn - rude teacher! Sounds like a very one sided person!
ha rumfff!! You don't need a teacher that is soooo rigid. Probably teaches revisionist/ideologically selective history anyway. You could learn just as much if not more just from watching all the great shows on the History Channel, et.al. similar networks!
Understandable not wanting your mom to complain. Glad you filed a complaint. The teacher should have cut you some slack just once, geesh! & you thought you liked him, just goes to show ya never really know what a person is like until they show their true colors. That teacher deserves an eloquent, stern, talkin' to! - Sharon Style LOL -something I have taken to the level of an art!!
As always, prayers for your continued happiness.

Nice! Thanks for sharing all this fantastic news. Competing, traveling and going to school all sounds challenging but rewarding. Don't worry about a hard-headed History teacher. They all have a history of living in the past. Jerry is the one giving us all an amazing history lesson here anyway.
All the best!

I am so glad to hear that the nausea issue is getting better. I get motion sickness extremely bad and can't even imagine having that every day. That is a huge relief for you i'm sure!

The soccer sounds great and so does the golf for your Mom.

The prayers don't stop! You remain at the forefront of my thoughts and are often called to mind when I see a green van making its way through town.

Chris worked all summer at the aquatics center in Irvine and was home for a brief week and ensconced himself in the woods - the OC is a bit much at times. Mary came home in late May still suffering from mono - took through July to gaind some strentgth and then she headed off for a month long Wilderness EMT course, passed the national registry and is now working events at Chico State as a hired EMT.

I am the caretaker of ROE, Mary's puppy. She's a gem and I love her to pieces. I'll take her up to Mary at the end of October and she'll bring ROE home when she comes back at Thanksgiving. (a trial time at her new place.) I'll bring her by. - the puppy that is.

How's power soccer? You went to FL right? Here's to more tournies. Keep safe, have fun and know you're remembered daily!

Love ya,

Trish

Well, Jer, friends come in all shapes and sizes. Been thinkin' of you and your folks and fam. Chris won't be home for Thanksgiving - we're headed there. We'll be down there for three days (think that's all Buel can handle without going into shock)

Wasn't sure if you went back to classes at Cabrillo this fall or not. I know you mom liked her golf class, so I hope you did, though I know your power soccer has given you an outlet and I love the videos of it.

Life fills in its gaps doesn't it. Know you remain in my prayers daily - therefore my thoughts :).

Jerry, You continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. Nickelback comes on and for some reason I think of you! Your cluster map continues to be 'busy' with yellow dots from around the world! They are all praying for you too I am sure. Hoping you aren't still suffering nausea; got back to Cabrillo this fall; and that you have many reasons to smile and laugh often. Think I'll watch the video you mentioned on your fb page, what was it called? Hot Coffee....don't know why 'HotTaco' is sticking in my head!
As always, praying for a cure for spinal cord injuries.
